2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series – Brutal, uncompromising and completely track-focused, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is the opposite of the typical comfort first Mercedes Benz. This is the final and most extreme evolution of AMG SLS supercar, as well as the division’s soul-stirring 6.2-liter V8, and as such boasts a tight suspension, numerous lightweight carbon fiber components and a resounding 622 horsepower.
The first time back in 2006 as AMG’s first in-house developed engine, the 6.2-liter V8 is quick to rev and has a reputation over the years as a very powerful and delicious-sounding mill. Strictly upcoming fuel regulations phased out in favor of a more efficient twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8, but not before he installed under the hood of a high-performance machine.
For service in the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, the mill received a host of upgrades – revised valve timing, shorter intake runners, forged hardware and optimized ignition timing which increases peak cylinder pressure – that increasing output of 583 horsepower in the SLS AMG GT 622 ponies. Torque rated at £ 468 m, and a maximum engine speed is a sky-high 8,000 rpm.
Working in concert with the more powerful engine acceleration to speed up a wide range of weight-reducing components. The hood, bottom brace, driveshaft, torque tube and panel aft of the seats are all constructed from carbon fiber, while a lithium-ion battery and a new titanium exhaust remove further excess pounds price. Buyers can even select the Instructions infotainment system to save £ 13 to remove.
Combined, these measures will bring the curb weight down to a claimed 3417 pounds – 154 pounds lighter than the standard model. With a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox sends the V8’s muscle to the rear wheels, the svelte 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is capable of amazing zero-to-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 196 mph.
A Coil suspension with electronically adjustable adaptive dampers keep the car under control and glued to the tarmac cornering and significantly firmer bushings, wider track and an AMG rear axle differential lock. The trade-off for the highly agile chassis is a true rock-hard ride – buyers should probably leave the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series at home as a journey calls for travel in less than well-maintained roads. Race car quality stopping power is provided by two-piece ceramic brakes with huge rotors measuring 15.8 inches up front and 14.2 inches around back.
Polarizing though it may be, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is a visual presence that is impossible to ignore. This office of the elegant, understated style of the normal SLS AMG GT with an aggressive body kit, larger front air intake and matte black forged alloy wheels. A front splitter and rear diffuser, both built of carbon fiber, helps to improve downforce and vents mounted on the bonnet and behind the rear wheels shed excess heat.
The optional AMG Aerodynamics package creates an even more extreme and functional look by adding a rear wing and unique environment in the corners of the front fascia. Again, both are rendered in carbon fiber and serve to boost downforce.
Within the SLS attractive cabin the performance look treatment center console trim building from (what else?) Carbon fiber and Alcantara-wrapped, flat-bottomed steering wheel with a red mark on the 12 o’clock position. The AMG sports seats and dashboard covered in premium “designo” leather, and the latter is characterized by a “3D seam” of anthracite-colored Alcantara trim that spans the full length.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series “entry level” audio system is a six-speaker, 100-watt AM / FM / CD / DVD setup, but audiophiles will want to opt for the available 1000-watt Bang & Olufsen upgrade unit with 11 speakers – including 250-watt subwoofers on the boards and two illuminated 50-watt tweeters on the dashboard. Bluetooth is standard, and an iPod/MP3 interface.
